When Did I Realize I Had Enough to Retire?
I was 36 years old, and to be honest, the realization of retiring happened much faster than I expected. Throughout my adult life, I have been living paycheck to paycheck, but the idea of retiring suddenly came into focus, which was a bit of a shock to me.
By most people's standards, I might appear to be a risk-taker. However, I view these risks as calculated and the most likely path to achieving the lifestyle I want in life. I don't have children and enjoy my work immensely, which makes it easier for me to commit fully to my career.
To break down the key elements that led to my ability to retire, there are two main areas:
Key Factors Enabling Retirement
1. Home with Minimal Debt
One of the two largest areas contributing to my retirement is owing very little on our home. We managed to buy a foreclosure in our desired neighborhood during the recession using a 15-year mortgage. This has significantly reduced our monthly expenses, making a comfortable retirement possible. Should we wish to pay off the home, it's an option at any point.
2. Building a Successful Business
The second significant contributor is our own company, which we started seven years ago. By selling the company, we would have enough capital to live comfortably without depleting the principal. The journey was arduous. The first year, I managed to pay myself only $16,000, and continued to do so well below market rates. However, the 7 years of work have likely equated to 10 years of effort. This has been the best financial decision I've ever made.
3. No Kids
Another factor is the lack of children. While everyone seems to love theirs, I can confidently say that raising children proves to be quite expensive. This has allowed my wife and me to save more easily.
Financial Safety Net
With our home paid off and assuming we sell the business at a favorable rate, we believe we will have enough to never work again if we choose to. Even in the worst-case scenario, where the company fails, we have other retirement accounts to fall back on, and my wife has a decent pension.
No Immediate Retirement Plans
Currently, I have no plans to retire. In fact, knowing about the possibility of retiring has made my work even more enjoyable. The best part about waking up and deciding every day what I want to work on has been an incredible reward. If I were to retire now, I might just start another company simply for fun.
Conclusion: The combination of a well-paid home, successful entrepreneurship, and the absence of children have made financial independence possible for me. The key to achieving early retirement is strategic planning, calculated risks, and making conscious decisions that fulfill your long-term financial goals.
