Replacing Your Social Security Card Without Memorizing Your SSN
Replacing your Social Security card can be a daunting task, especially if you can't remember your Social Security Number (SSN). However, with the right steps, you can successfully replace your card without having to recall all the details!
Find Your SSN
If you don't have your SSN memorized, you'll need to find it. Check the following documents where your SSN might be listed:
Tax returns Pay stubs W-2 forms Bank statementsIf you can’t find it in any of these, you can request a verification of your SSN from the Social Security Administration (SSA) by calling their hotline or visiting their website.
Complete the Application
The next step is to fill out Form SS-5, the application for a Social Security card. You can download it from the SSA website or request a paper form at your local SSA office.
Gather Required Documents
To complete the application, you will need to provide proof of your identity. Acceptable documents include:
U.S. passport Driver’s license State-issued ID card Military ID Other government-issued identificationSubmit Your Application
You can submit your application in person at your local SSA office or by mail. If you choose to mail it, include copies of your identification documents. Do not send the originals.
After processing your application, the SSA will send your new card to you. This typically takes about 10-14 business days.
Immediate Assistance
If you're unable to retrieve your SSN and need immediate assistance, visit your local SSA office for help. They can assist you with the process and verify your identity.
Replacement Process for Lost Cards
If you lost your card, you may not need a replacement unless you specifically require it. In most cases, simply knowing your Social Security number (SSN) is enough. But if you do need a replacement, you can complete your application online or in-person.
Using my Social Security Account
Visit our SSN and Card webpage and answer a few questions to find out the best way to apply for your replacement card. In most states, you can use your personal my Social Security account to request a replacement card. If you cannot do that, you can still begin your application online and self-schedule an appointment to complete it at your local Social Security office or Card Center. Scheduling online can save you time when you come to visit us to complete the application.
Alternative Application Methods
If you cannot complete the application online using my Social Security account, you will need to provide the required documents in person. You are required to provide different documents depending on your citizenship and the type of card you are requesting. If you do not begin the application online, you will need to complete a paper Application for a Social Security Card Form SS-5 and bring your required documents to a local Social Security office or Card Center. To save time, you can download, complete, and print the paper application SS-5 form before you arrive.
