Realistic Tips and Insights from a PGDBA Interview Experience

After my journey through the application process at prestigious institutions like the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP), and Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Kolkata, I am excited to share my experience of the PGDBA (Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration) interviews.

Profile Overview

I am a GEF (Gas and Energy Facility) Mechanical Engineer with a significant background in the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) industry. My professional experience spans 29 months of work experience, and I was fortunate to have my interview scheduled on Day 2, Sunday, May 7, 2023, at the Mumbai center.

The Interview Process

The interview day at the Mumbai center was divided into two panels. I was fortunate to be in the later slot, which included a panel of three distinguished academic figures from ISI, IIT-KGP, and IIM-C. These experts were exceptionally knowledgeable and sought to understand both my professional experience and my readiness for a rigorous academic environment.

Summary of the Interview Experience

P1 (ISI)

P1 began by asking for a brief introduction and then delved into the intricacies of the EPC industry. They inquired about my reasons for pursuing a PGDBA and what I have studied in my curriculum related to data. Despite my well-rehearsed answers, some of the questions on numerical methods and calculus required me to explain my understanding rather than provide a memorized response. P1 guided me through these concepts, ensuring I provided a complete answer.

Situation:

Panel Question: "What is the rank of a matrix?" My Response: "The rank of a matrix is the maximum number of linearly independent column vectors or row vectors." P1 helped me clarify the concept further if needed.

P2 (IIT-KGP)

P2 asked me to share current news and then probed deeper about the reasons behind the violence in the northeastern parts of India. They tested my knowledge on complex topics such as the Karnataka elections, showcasing their keen interest in current affairs. P2 also asked me sample case studies related to data analytics in the EPC industry, which required me to think critically and present analytical insights.

P3 (IIM-C)

P3 initiated the interview by asking a question related to statistics, asking about the units of variance. After an incorrect initial response, I was guided to the correct answer. Personal hobbies were also discussed, revealing my interests and passion for art and food.

Verdict and Advice

To my surprise, I received a favorable verdict and was successfully admitted. The verdict marked the successful completion of an intricate and intense interview process which brought together both academic rigor and personal qualities.
