Can Trump End the War Between Russia and Ukraine?
Just as soon as he can put that call through to Putin saying, “What are your orders, Master,” Trump may believe that he can coup de grace the conflict by cutting off all aid to Ukraine. But does his vision of a new American greatness include appeasing a dictator like Putin?
President Zelenskyy’s Views
Zelenskyy seems to think so. President Zelenskyy has claimed that Russia’s war against his country will culminate sooner than it otherwise would if Trump becomes the US President next year. In a radio interview that aired on Saturday, the Ukrainian president conceded that the battlefield situation in eastern Ukraine was difficult and Russia was making advances, but he said his counterpart Vladimir Putin was not interested in agreeing to a peace deal.
When asked about talks with Trump, Zelenskyy said, “US legislation, the Logan Act, prevents me from meeting Trump before his inauguration next January. The Ukrainian leader said he would only talk with Trump rather than an emissary or adviser.”
He stressed, “I, as the President of Ukraine, will only take seriously a conversation with the President of the United States of America with all due respect to any entourage or people. From our side, we must do everything so that this war ends next year through diplomatic means.”
Trump's Stance
On Friday, POTUS said, “We're going to work very hard on Russia and Ukraine. It's got to stop. ” This comes after he had a phone conversation with Zelenskyy, in which he didn’t hear anything that goes against our position.
However, many doubt that Trump can significantly impact the conflict. Some question whether Trump would dare to blackmail Putin, given his approaching end. Moreover, there is much speculation over Trump’s fate post-inauguration, as some believe he may be impeached or even face other legal consequences.
Speculation and Criticism
Others dismiss Trump’s promises of peace in 24 hours as mere bollocks. They argue that Trump has talked his way out of various crises over the years, but his promises often ring hollow. They predict that the conflict will still be ongoing by February and definitely in March. Wishing to tie a diaper around his mouth, some suggest that Trump merely spouts nonsense and that any meaningful change is unlikely to come from his side.
Despite the skepticism, Trump's potential influence over the Russia-Ukraine conflict remains a topic of intense debate and anticipation. As the global community continues to watch and wait, the question of whether Trump can end the war remains as complex as the conflict itself.
